Meet Perth’s Finest: Flynn May, Brodie Sprylan & Kyle Skiba - The Heart of Inversion Fightwear’s Perth Athlete Team

Behind every great grappling performance is a story of hard work, quiet discipline, and genuine character. At the core of Perth’s competitive BJJ and wrestling scene are three athletes who not only dominate on the mats but also inspire off them: Flynn May, Brodie Sprylan, and Kyle Skiba.

They come from different gyms and competitive backgrounds, but all three share one thing in common: they’re among the most authentic human beings you’ll meet in the Australian grappling community.

Flynn May – Wrestling Phenom, Grappling Force, Perth’s Future

Few names in the Perth scene are rising faster than Flynn May. A coach at Gladiators Wrestling, Flynn has built a reputation as a takedown machine, blending elite wrestling fundamentals with ever-evolving no-gi jiu-jitsu.

At just 20-something, his list of accomplishments is already staggering:

  • 🥇 10x WA State Wrestling Champion
  • 🥇 2023 & 2024 National Freestyle Wrestling Champion
  • 🥇 ASJJF Oceania No-Gi Champion (2020)
  • 🥇 2019 Australian BJJ National Champion
  • 🥇 Grapple Mania Super Fight Winner
  • 🥇 BG3 Gold Medalist

Flynn is universally admired, not just for his athletic dominance, but for his kindness, generosity, and the respect he shows everyone on and off the mats. He’s one of those rare athletes who’s equally effective in a corner coaching kids as he is hitting clean double legs under the lights.

Brodie Sprylan “Mr Ecological” – ADCC Trials Medalist, Evolution BJJ Coach,

Brodie Sprylan put the region on notice at the 2024 ADCC Asia & Oceania Trials, earning an incredible bronze medal in the -99kg division. Representing Evolution BJJ, Brodie’s calm, clinical style and high-pressure passing game made him one of the most composed competitors of the tournament.

Brodie isn’t new to the Perth scene, he’s been grinding in silence for years. A lifelong friend of Inversion Fightwear founder Bryce Nie, the two met in school and have known each other for nearly 20 years. Though they didn’t share mats growing up, their mutual respect and parallel paths in the sport speak volumes.

Brodie is known for his technical depth, quiet work ethic, and ecological approach. No drama. No ego. Just results.

Kyle Skiba – Roar MMA Coach, International Medallist, Wrestling-BJJ Hybrid Veteran

Kyle Skiba is one of the most decorated black belts in the country, and arguably one of the most underrated. A coach at Roar MMA, Kyle brings years of competitive jiu-jitsu and freestyle wrestling experience, with medals across nearly every major competition circuit:

  • 🥉 European Open Medalist – Blue Belt
  • 🥇 Multiple Pan Pacific Champion – Purple & Brown Belt
  • 🥈 Asian Open Silver Medalist – Black Belt
  • 🥇 Multiple-Time State BJJ Champion – Black Belt
  • 🥇 Multiple-Time Freestyle Wrestling State Champion
  • 🥉 National Wrestling Medallist

Kyle’s style is technical and relentless, but what stands out most is how deeply respected he is by his peers. He’s a technician and a true ambassador of the sport.

Perth’s Most Genuine Grapplers

While their achievements speak for themselves, what makes Flynn, Brodie, and Kyle truly exceptional is their character. In a sport that can be filled with bravado, these three are known for being genuinely kind, respectful, and supportive, the kinds of athletes who will corner your match, help you drill after class, or check in with you before a comp.

They don’t chase spotlight. They earn respect.

Whether it’s on a national podium, an ADCC stage, or a local open mat, these three represent everything that’s right about combat sports. And we’re proud to support their journeys, both as athletes and as role models for the next generation of grapplers.
